Another Sunday morning – 8am.
This time against the minor premiers – Sharks. A tough, aggressive, and fast line-up, with a big left footed crossing winger, and a game based around putting the ball over our defence and rushing forward.
We had our full line up again – always a big advantage. But the girls went a goal down in the first 10 minutes. A free kick just outside the top corner of the 18 yard box. Lofted ball in, defender tried to head it clear but skimmed the ball and it burst through the keepers hands, and into the net.
The wind was running into our faces, and the early morning sun also – and the whole half was pretty much played in our part of the field. We cleared the ball too often centrally, and were being beaten to the ball also.
Time for a chat and some sugar – the girls will ignore oranges if there are lollies it seems.
Second half was the reverse of the first. We camped largely in their half, with our forwards pressuring mistakes from their goal kicks, allowing the midfield to stay in position and the defence had worked out their tactic also
We scored the equalizer about 15 min into the second half – a calm side foot finish past the advancing keeper and then a volley from a loose ball with 3 minutes to go.
The girls hung on for a win – guaranteed finals spot and a happy car trip back to Harold West for team photos.
The end to a great week where we had Alix Roberts deliver a great session at training on Thursday – and some of the girls enjoyed an extra session with Courtnee Vine on Friday night. Cant help but be inspired and improve with such opportunities.
Thanks to the parents who get the girls their on time and set the field up – meaning the players can focus on warming up and plans for the day.
