Gorilla Cup 2019 - Wrap Up

The Gold Coast Champions Cup is an initiative of the Mudgeeraba Soccer Club, Queensland.  Known as the Gorilla Cup under its naming rights sponsor, Gorilla Sports Gear, the tournament has run annually since 1996 with the aim offering the youth of the Gold Coast, and visiting teams, the opportunity to advance their football skills while simultaneously developing cultural understanding, respect and friendship through sport.

The tournament, running in October each year attracts teams from around Australia and overseas, across age groups up to u18s with mixed, boys & girls competitions.

So Roselea FC gathered at Sydney Airport on Saturday 28th September and flew out for the 2019 tournament.  This Roselea FC touring squad came from our G16s, G15s and some guest players, mainly from Gladesville Ravens.

This tournament was a huge challenge to our girls. We found ourselves as the only community club team.  All our opposition were Academy, District representative or WNPL teams from around Australia plus an elite schoolgirl team from New Zealand.

We had hoped for a 2-division competition which would see us compete against other club teams from around Australia. But as happens too often in girl’s football – lack of team entries meant everyone in together and most teams being of higher rep levels.

However, true to the spirit that is Roselea FC, our girls jumped right in and had a go.  Despite some really tough score lines, the girls kept giving, kept improving and learnt a lot individually and collectively about what it takes to compete at that next level up (or 2 or 3 levels in some cases).

In doing so the team did themselves, and the club, proud.  They gained wide recognition for their effort, commitment, and good spirited play, match after match across the whole week of competition.

The total tour experience was wonderful – strengthening the team, forming friendships across age groups within our club, and across the sport more widely.  It built great club spirit and contributed to personal growth that comes from a group of 15-16 year old girls living, playing and working together with minimal adult supervision and different personal and group responsibilities.

The tour will have created memories that will be held for a lifetime and sent home a group of young ladies who were better, wiser, and stronger for the experience.

A huge thank you to Tour Management Group – the parent volunteers who supported the tour – to Rohan - with whom I developed a new and great relationship as Coach / Assistant Coach; to Amanda, Kathy & Heather - who, as Tour Chaperones, worked tirelessly to support and organise the girls in all things off-field.  Also, to Heather whose professional medical experience was invaluable as our Tour Doctor.   And to our spectator group – parents and siblings - who contributed so much on the sidelines and off the field.

The fun, experience, learning and growth that comes from sports touring is a huge value add that Roselea FC wants to offer our players.  The 2019 Gorilla Cup in Queensland was such an experience.  The club will be looking for many more to come.
